Anthony Hamilton: Man behind success of Lewis Hamilton; a sneak-peek in struggle before F1

Anthony Hamilton: How Lewis Hamilton’s father made him a World Champion, a brief story on the story of the duo before the F1 years.

Lewis Hamilton’s journey to Formula 1 has not been rough, being the first black driver in the history of the sport brings certain advantages, but it also brings substantial societal prejudices and limitations.

Since a young age, Hamilton has remained a subject to racism his childhood, and it continued till his professional career in Formula 1 and on present-day Hamilton openly speaks against racism.

Despite the odds, Hamilton made it into the top tier of the motor racing sport. Much of the credits to his success goes to his father, who guided him from his go-karting days to being his manager till 2010.

However things were rough in between, but still, nobody can undervalue the contribution Anthony Martial has played in his son’s budding days which made him the 6-time World Champion.

It’s a well-stated fact that F1 is an expensive sport, but it is also a reality that even go-karting, which is the necessary level of racing done by every F1 driver in their childhood to initiate their ambition in the sport, is expensive.

It was revealed in a documentary by BBC that Hamilton’s father went through a series of jobs to afford his son’s requirements while he was aged 8.

At that time, Anthony represented him and went on to serve until 2010. Hamilton being an active participant of karting was accompanied by his father everywhere.

“We came from nothing, and I didn’t have anyone telling me to do this or do that, I had to learn myself,” Hamilton Snr. explains to CNN. “But one thing I knew was that you’ve just got to be positive and believe in yourself. Sometimes people use that term ‘believe in yourself’ flippantly, but the reality is you have got to believe.”

He funded his races until McLaren scouted the talented driver and took into their academy programme. Rest is history with Lewis winning the World Championship 6 times and now on the verge of grabbing the 7th title.

A rough patch in the relationship

After 3 years of serving McLaren in Formula 1, Lewis decided to sack his father as his manager. After which they both did not speak to each other for a few years.

Recently, Lewis shared his sturdy relationship with his father on social media and discussed how they are trying to improve the situation between them.

“Our journey hasn’t been an easy one,” said Mercedes driver Hamilton on social media. Over time, we lost that father-son bond and it has been something we have both wanted back for so long.”

The 35-year-old added: “The past couple years we’ve been growing closer and this winter break I asked my dad to come to visit me so we could spend some time together, just us.

“We haven’t done this before, so to finally get to spend quality time with him has brought me so much happiness. Family is the most important thing in the world. “

“You can’t choose your family but you can make it work with them no matter what your differences. They are the ones that will be there when you have nothing.”

With Hamilton being at the eclipse of his career, Anthony hardly ever makes his appearances on the Grand Prix events, but still a respected figure in the fraternity for making his son a world champion.
