'Going to Explode...': George Russell Joins Harry Kane in Spreading Awareness About Mental Health

Star Mercedes driver George Russell recently had a conversation with Harry Kane to voice his support for the latter’s mental health organization. During Mental Health Week, the England football team captain and the 25-year-old had a chat to help normalize such conversations and request those in need to seek help.

Kane began the conversation by telling Russell how both of them throughout their careers have gone through several highs and lows. The Tottenham striker stated that when he needs help, he would often ‘lean‘ on his family and his wife for support.

However, he believes that despite doing so, there have been instances when even they do not understand the struggles that sports professionals go through. Kane then ended his point by explaining how in such situations, he would then try and speak to as many people as possible to help reduce the stresses of everyday life.

In reply, Russell said,

Everybody is going to have struggles at one point or another. Find them ways to deal with that. You just cannot let it stay inside and let that pressure build-up because we are all going to explode at some point. And that is why I want to encourage people to talk about it and encourage people to seek help when needed“.

George Russell himself has visited a psychologist

In an interview with Men’s Health Magazine earlier this year, George Russell himself admitted that he has visited a therapist to seek help for his mental health. The Briton in the interview explained how glad he was to have received this advice to seek help.

Russell stated that after having the conversation with his therapist, he felt much better and it helped him to ‘lift’ himself up again from all the negativity he was going through. In the same interview, the 25-year-old explained how it needed ‘courage’ for him to reach out for help as he did not have the ‘energy to do anything‘ considering the state of mind he was in.

Russell has had an average start to the 2023 season

After having a fantastic season with Mercedes last year when he finished fourth in the championship, George Russell would be slightly disappointed with his performance so far. The Briton is currently sixth in the championship with 40 points, 16 points behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton.

While the Silver Arrows have struggled to match the pace of leaders Red Bull this season, Russell too has been inconsistent with his performances. Other than the DNF he had in Australia for no fault of his own, the 25-year-old has registered two fourth-place finishes, and one seventh and one eighth-place finish so far.

With an important triple-header coming up, Russell and Mercedes will hope to score some good points. The next race in the F1 2023 calendar is in Imola this weekend from May 19 to 21.
