The Spanish Grand Prix turned out to be quite a successful weekend for Mercedes. The upgrades brought in by the Silver Arrows worked wonders as both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell claimed podium places. On the contrary, it was a weekend to forget for Fernando Alonso as he encountered his worst result this season with a P7 finish. Nevertheless, Alonso believes that this was a one-off incident and that Aston Martin will be back in form again when Formula 1 travels to Canada for the next race.
Mercedes managed to conjure up an impressive result after a not-so-good qualifying session. Hamilton started P4 and Russell had to start P12, right behind Red Bull’s Sergio Perez. However, Russell made an exceptional recovery drive to finish P3, one place ahead of Perez. Hamilton also improved from his starting position to claim second place.

As for Aston Martin, the weekend did not go as planned. Lance Stroll had started from P5, but fell one place back and finished in sixth place. Alonso too made some amends for his poor qualifying, but it wasn’t enough as he finished P7, recording his worst finish this season.
Fernando Alonso hopes for a come-back in Canada
Formula 1 travels to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix after a 1-week gap. Alonso believes that Aston Martin will regain their lost form in Canada and re-overtake Mercedes in the constructor’s standings. He is even more confident about making a comeback because Aston Martin will be bringing in new upgrades to the upcoming race.
“I think it’s just one race – and then in Canada, we crush them,” said Alonso as quoted by Formu1a.uno. He continued, “In Canada, we’ll bring more things, and in Silverstone too… It will all depend on which team is bringing updates.”

Fernando Alonso’s poor Spanish GP Qualifying
Aston Martin’s Spanish Grand Prix weekend already started falling apart when Fernando Alonso suffered floor damage during qualifying. This meant that he could only qualify P9, which was upgraded to P8 at the start of the race after Pierre Gasly was given a grid penalty for impeding.
Alonso believes that his Aston Martin was competitive enough to beat Hamilton even with a damaged floor. “The car still felt competitive even with some damage on the floor,” said Alonso after the Qualifying.
Alonso also admitted that even though Mercedes has overtaken them in the Constructor’s standing, he is happy that they have been able to gain some margin over Ferrari. “Looking at the constructors’, it’s true that Mercedes gained some important points, but we again gained points on Ferrari,” said Alonso. Overall, Alonso seems incredibly happy with Aston Martin, and is ready to make a come back in Canada
