Lewis Hamilton Replies if He Ever "Hooked Up" With Toto Wolff Under the Guise of Contract Renegotiations

Ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend, all eyes have been on Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton ever since team principal Toto Wolff revealed that the Briton is close to signing a contract extension. When Hamilton was asked during the press conference for an update and if he had “hooked up” with Wolff, the 38-year-old hilariously made a double meaning joke out of it.

In reply, Hamilton stated, “We have never hooked up“. When the reporter asked Hamilton for confirmation, the Mercedes driver once again replied, “We have never hooked up“. It was at this point that the reporter understood that Hamilton was making a double meaning joke out of it.

On hearing Hamilton’s clever reply, AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen had a wild smile. With both Hamilton and Wolff having stated that they are close to coming to an agreement, all eyes are likely to be on them for the coming days.

Did you have a meeting“: Reporter rephrases his question to Hamilton

After hearing Lewis Hamilton’s epic reply, the reporter rephrased his question. He then asked the Briton, “Did you have a meeting“? The Mercedes driver then gave his genuine response by stating, “I have seen Toto. We have talked several times. We have a great relationship, but there’s nothing else to say at the moment“.

When asked if they made progress, Hamilton acknowledged that he and Toto Wolff had made progress. However, he stated that it was not enough to provide an update about the same.

The 38-year-old’s latest remarks sound like a setback to what Wolff said a few days ago. When asked in an interview with CNBC about Hamilton’s contract situation, Wolff replied that they are talking more “days than weeks” when it comes to getting to an agreement.

Moreover, Lewis Hamilton had himself stated during the Spanish GP two weeks ago that he was meeting Wolff around that time, and that he hoped to get his contract situation settled then. However, with both parties still to come to an agreement, speculations will undoubtedly once again rise over Hamilton’s future.

Is Lewis Hamilton going to sign his final contract in F1?

Amid Lewis Hamilton’s contract negotiations, reports have emerged that the Briton is likely to sign a multi-year deal. Since Hamilton is already 38, this could indeed be the final time that he takes part in a contract negotiation.

And if that is the case, then Hamilton is likely to be certain that Mercedes is the right team for him to continue in. While the Silver Arrows did produce a much better performance in Spain two weeks ago with a double podium finish, they are still way behind leaders Red Bull in terms of pace.

Moreover, with reigning champion Max Verstappen flying at the moment, Hamilton has also acknowledged that the Dutchman could indeed get past his achievements in the sport.

While speaking of the same ahead of the Canadian GP this weekend, Hamilton said (as quoted by The Guardian), “We have to work harder to try and continue to extend [the win record]. I hope that at least within the last period of time in my career we get to have some close racing“.

This remark not only suggests that Hamilton is keen to extend his contract with Mercedes, but also that he feels threatened by Verstappen’s current dominance. Hence, the Briton wants to try as hard as possible to extend his current win record of 103 to put it out of the Red Bull driver’s reach.
