Michael Schumacher is often considered the greatest F1 driver of all time. Meanwhile, Mick Doohan, a legendary Moto GP racer, comes in the same league as he had won five world championships when the series was called the 500 CC championship.
Considering the two had immense love for motorsports and speed, they bonded well and became friends, even though they used to compete in two different arenas.
Though fate was too harsh on Doohan’s career, as in 1992, he had a horrific accident that severely injured his leg. He couldn’t recover from the effects of the injury till 1994. The Australian racer again had an injury in 1999 during practice, which eventually ended his reign in the sport.

Michael Schumacher named Mick Schumacher after his friend
The seven-time world champion was so fond of his friendship with Doohan that he named his only son after the latter. Following his father’s and Doohan’s legacy, Mick Schumacher is an F1 driver. He made his F1 debut with Haas in 2021 after comprehensively winning the F2 championship in 2020.
Now, the German national is a reserve driver at Mercedes and is often touted as a great talent. On the other hand, Doohan’s son Jack Doohan is also vying to become an F1 driver. In 2023, he will be competing in Formula 2.
Doohan Jnr’s aspiration probably came from the Ferrari legend when he gave him the first kart of his life. Little Schumacher had known that his friend’s kid would eventually climb up to F2 from there.

Where is Mick Doohan now?
After his crash in 1999, Doohan retired from motor racing and moved on in his life. Currently, he lives in Brisbane and has a peaceful life away from the media frenzy sport.
However, he is still making a fortune even though his motor racing talent can no more support him. He is reportedly running a very successful corporate jet business. He is apparently the go-to man for this purchase in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.
Back in the 90s, hardly anyone would have thought that the fierce bike racer would go on and charm his customers to buy $60 million worth of planes from him.
