Resurfaced Video Reveals Fernando Alonso Has A Gigantic Edge Over Max Verstappen at Spanish GP's New Track Layout

A resurfaced video from 2003 has revealed a gigantic edge that Fernando Alonso has over Max Verstappen at the Spanish GP track’s new layout. The video displayed Alonso’s incredible skills but also revealed that Alonso is the only driver on the current grid to have driven on the new track layout in Barcelona.

The Spaniard has been a constant on the F1 podiums since the start of this year. In the previous race in Monaco, the Aston Martin driver had a tough fight with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for the race win.

The Spaniard is inching closer towards his much-hyped 33rd race win. And with the veteran driver having in-depth experience of his home track, Alonso’s Spanish GP weekend is expected to be a blockbuster.

Fernando Alonso remains the only driver to have driven on turn 12 in Barcelona

An old video from the 2003 Spanish GP shows a technical advantage that only Fernando Alonso possesses in the entire 2023 F1 grid. The Spaniard is the only driver to have driven in the traditional pre-2003 layout of the track.

For the 2023 Spanish GP, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has reverted to its original layout. F1 has scrapped the controversial Turn 12 chicane, which was blamed for making overtakes difficult in the main straight. However, now turn 12 remains a fast righthander where drivers will be expected to go flat out.

The video shows a 23-year-old Spaniard acing the track. Commentator Martin Brundle can be heard praising the youngster who qualified 3rd behind the two Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello.

While Max Verstappen and other drivers might have perfected the lap for hours on the sim, Alonso has the benefit of experience. The driver is known for his skillful driving and will be a tough opponent to the Dutchman in his home race.

Alonso gears up for the home race

Fernando Alonso is buzzing with energy after returning home for the 2023 Spanish GP. Aston Martin’s strong performance in the Monaco GP has also boosted the driver’s hopes of doing the unthinkable in the coming weekend.

The Spaniard is ready to make it a memorable race for his fans. He said to DAZN“Whenever I arrive in Barcelona there is a special energy. You race in front of your audience. This year more than ever, and let’s see if we can make them happy.”

However, Alonso remains skeptical about Aston Martin’s hunt for their first race win. The driver claims anything is possible, but has written off hopes for a big upset on Sunday.

He added, “Red Bull has dominated all year and it would not have to change in Barcelona. But you always have an extra when you race at home, and the weather seems a bit changeable. Let’s see if we can take advantage of the opportunity.”

The 2x world champion secured his last race win during the 2013 Spanish GP. Now, the local hero has returned after a decade to secure his 33rd race win. However, Alonso remains confident that number 33 will arrive before the season ends.
