"They should be banned"– Alpha Tauri boss knows what caused Verstappen-Stroll tyre puncture

“They should be banned”– Alpha Tauri boss knows what caused Verstappen-Stroll tyre puncture during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Red Bull and Aston Martin had a partially sad end to their efforts in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix because Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll had the opportunity to grab the maximum out of the race.

But partially because their other drivers managed to finish on the podiums, and Mercedes went home without any points. But watching the larger picture, the unprecedented punctures is a safety concern.

Red Bull’s sister team- Alpha Tauri’s boss Franz Tost has explained why this happened, and according to him, he had earlier cautioned everyone about its risks and wanted it to be banned.

“I indicated three years ago that they should be banned. However, many other teams were against that, because everyone thought they would have an advantage through a special trick,” Tost explained to Auto, Motor und Sport.

“The problems are actually self-made. There are several reasons against the tyre warmers. Firstly the technology and secondly the durability”.

And it’s unnecessarily expensive.

Tost then also claims that while they are not needed and cause a grave risk, he also pointed out the massive costs teams are paying for it which can be used elsewhere.

“You should see how many tire warmers are plugged in overnight. Thirdly, the cost. I signed a contract for 2022 around the tyre warmers and it came to 375,000 euros,” Tost concluded.

Pirelli gives explanation

Pirelli had some answers to give when the FIA summoned them over the two crashes in Baku. After an investigation made by the tyre manufacturers, they claim that both Aston Martin and Red Bull were running on low-pressure.

That eventually caused their collapse in the latter part of the race, but some teams are not convinced by this explanation and seek an elaborate answer.
