Fabianski and Szczesny Interview

Fabianski and Szczesny Interview: The duo shared some funny stories about the Arsenal dressing room, and imitated Arsene Wenger.

The Polish goalkeeping duo spent a significant part of their career at Arsenal. While Lukasz Fabianski joined the Gunners in 2007, Wojciech Szczesny arrived two years later. The latter emerged as an important first-team player at the side, but the former spent most of his time on the sidelines.

Fabianski left the side in 2014 for fellow Premier League side Swansea City. Szczesny, meanwhile, made 132 Premier League appearances across five full seasons for the side, before leaving the club in 2017. He currently plays for Italian champions Juventus.

The duo appeared in an interview for Polish channel Onet, where they talked in length about their career, and their time at Arsenal.

Both the players shared a lot of comical stories, and even mimicked Arsenal’s former manager, Arsene Wenger.

Fabianski and Szczesny interview:

Both the goalkeepers recalled a rather embarrassing story involving Arsenal’s former GK coach, Gerry Peyton. The Irishman was the coach at the side from 2003 to 2018, leaving with the departure of Arsene Wenger. Here’s the story from Wojceich Szczesny:

“Before the match with Chelsea I hear [from Peyton]: ‘Watch out. When Hazard takes his penalties, he will shoot at the opposite side of where you will dive.’ And that’s funny, but then you’re like did he really just said that?’

Fabianski joined in soon with his story. “Mentioning penalty analysis, he used to say (Garry): ‘listen, he shoots that side or that side, but best go with your feeling.’ So, he shoots here and there, but do whatever you want more or less.”

The duo also talked about a goalkeeper’s debriefing conducted by Peyton. The video compiled all the errors, and the debriefing finished with the end of the video.

“One time we had a GK debriefing out of nowhere,” began Szczesny. “And it’s a 4-5 min video of goals that I let past me, but could have done better.”

Fabianski added that all the goalkeepers in the first-team squad were present at the debriefing, but Peyton only showed Sczcesny’s errors.

“So, we’re watching, but we don’t know what the f*** is going on. It’s just showing errors, he [Garry Peyton] is not explaining anything. So the video ends and Garry says: ‘See, you’re not perfect.’

“And that was it. We’re all looking at each other like welp.”

The duo also talked about the time when they met Arsene Wenger to ask him to leave the club.

Szczesny revealed that he left his farewell letter on his desk, and Fabianski begins to mimic Arsene Wenger.

“Well, I want you to stay, but you can go,” Fabianski funnily says in Wenger’s voice. Here’s the video of the part:
