Federer vs Millman highlights as the Australian pulls off one of the biggest upsets of his career.
A largely fatigued and erroneous Federer took the court at the Arthur Ashe today. Everything about him seemed off, his baseline play, his serve, the overuse of the drop shots and even the excessive perspiration.
The first set win masked all of that though, as Federer seemed to be on course for a routine evening in New York.
6-3, 5-4(40-15) up and John Millman was in for a drubbing of sorts, but he dug deep, made Federer stretch and attained parity in the match.
From there on, someone turned off the switch on Federer, as the World no.2 wasn’t quite moving well on the court, had lost some confidence on his ground strokes and wasn’t generally able to serve his way out of trouble.
Millman kept knocking on the door, refused to go away and rose to the occasion during the important moments of the set.
In the end, a horrendous tie break in the 4th set from Federer(wherein he served 2 double faults) meant that Millman had pulled off the biggest upset of his career.
The Arthur Ashe was deflated as they had seen their hero bow out in a way that is uncharacteristic to him.
This is how Twitter reacted:
Absolutely stunning upset as @johnhmillman defeats Federer 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 7-6 under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium!

Federer served worse tonight than he did against Robredo 5 years ago, but overall play? Man, that’s a tough one to agree with. Federer was serving for a 2-set lead tonight, and then it all went downhill.

“I have so much respect for Roger and everything he’s done for the game and he’s been a hero of mine and today he was definitely not at his best but, you know, I’ll take it” – John Millman after upsetting Roger Federer in the 4th round of the US Open

2 elements to this:
1) The tennis gods owed some kind of a big result to Millman for all his injuries. Quitting the game and coming back.2) I think we can safely say (or at least IMO) that something was up physically with Federer. 10 double faults, 77 UEs, shot selection etc

Stunning to see Federer play a fairly loose tiebreak when facing elimination. Stunning to see him lose, period.

Yeesh, that is, without a doubt, the worst match I’ve seen Federer play in a good half-decade at least.

Not that long ago, @dannyandrussell wrote this about John Millman sleeping in airports & the other shortcuts that lower-ranked players have to take to survive on the tour.
He just beat Roger Federer at the #USOpen. https://t.co/QMSnZmSSSs

Not to be a spoil sport, but nobody wants to see a career turd like Millman take Federer out tonight. Nothing personal, and I’m sure he’s a nice enough guy, but, uh, no. Just not feeling this one.. #USOpen

Roger Federer players one of the worst matches of his career to lose against a great John Millman 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(7), 7-6(3) to reach the #USOpen QFs.

John Millman facts:
Counted to infinity. Twice.
Once beat the sun in a staring contest.
Can hear sign language.
Can do a wheelie on a unicycle.
The only man to defeat a brick wall and Roger Federer in a game of tennis. #USOpen pic.twitter.com/bEptz6KuCD

To put John Millman’s win in perspective:
At the age of 29, Roger Federer had won 16 grand slam singles titles.
At the age of 29, Millman hasn’t even played in 16 grand slam singles tournaments. #USOpen— Brydon Coverdale (@brydoncoverdale) September 4, 2018
On a plane following #USOpen on the app. Is this real? No glitch? @rogerfederer on the brink? Dream QF rescripted?
