Diego Maradona is beloved in his native country of Argentina for leading them to World Cup glory in 1986. He also helped Napoli to their first ever Italian League title in 1987. Following his passing, Argentine President Alberto Fernandez called for three days of mourning across the country. He also posted a tribute to Maradona on Twitter.

The UEFA have also announced that Maradona will be honored with a minute’s silence before Wednesday’s Champions League games.

“He will go down in history as someone who set football alight and thrilled fans young and old with his brilliance and skill,” UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin said in a statement.

In 2000, FIFA ran an online Player of the Century poll. Maradona gained 54 percent of the vote, Pele was second with 18 percent, but FIFA declared them joint winners.

Maradona’s life had as many lows as he did the highs. For all of the trophies and honor he won, he battled several demons off the pitch. Cocaine and Alcohol took a toll on him. They plagued him during his playing days and never stopped haunting him until his unfortunate and untimely death.

Maradona’s family has authorized an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death, according to a source close to the legend.
