As the January transfer window approaches, clubs are eyeing moves to strengthen their squads. Even when Eric Abidal stated last week that it is highly unlikely that Barcelona will make more signings in January, the club is reportedly making significant moves the future.
Frenkie de Jong, the Ajax midfielder, has long been linked with a move to Barcelona. The 21-year old footballer was heavily speculated to join the Catalan side in the summer, but no deal was put on the table.
However, it is now being reported that de Jong has agreed a five-year contract at Barcelona.

According to German outlet SportBild, the midfielder has agreed a five-year contract with Barcelona. The Catalan side has thus beaten Bayern Munich to his signature.
Barcelona only needs to agree terms with Ajax to complete the move for the midfielder. The report claims that the Dutch side has put a 75 million euros price-tag for De Jong, but Barca believes they can sign him for 60 million euros.
Earlier, Barcelona star Lionel Messi spoke highly of De Jong, as well as his Ajax teammate Matthijs de Ligt.
“They come from a school very similar to our own,” said Messi, in an interview with Marca.
“There they work in practically the same way. They play like us, having the ball, possession, good feet, they are young players with a lot of precision. Two very good players.”
