Gautam Gambhir passes massive statement regarding MS Dhoni's retirement

Gambhir passes massive statement regarding MS Dhoni’s retirement: Former Indian cricketer was vocal about two wicket-keeper batsmen.

In Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rishabh Pant, two of India’s wicket-keeper batsmen are continually doing the rounds in media these days. While Dhoni is being discussed with respect to his retirement, Pant is being discussed regarding whether he should be given more opportunities at the highest level or not.

In a recent interview with NDTV Sports, former India opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has shared his thoughts regarding too much attention being given to Pant. Laying emphasis on his young age, Gambhir wants captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri to give Pant the required freedom.

“There is too much attention that is being given to a new player [Rishabh Pant]. He is just 21, he has played for last two and a half years. He has got two hundreds in Test cricket. We should not be comparing him with anyone, the team management should be backing him in the right way. He is still young and he has got a long future ahead.

“Team management should talk to Pant. Not just Kohli, Ravi Shastri should also speak to him. Pant should be given freedom, if you curb him, he won’t play to his potential. You have to accept that Pant will not always get his shot selection right. On his day, he can win you a game,” Gambhir was quoted as saying.

Speaking about Dhoni, Gambhir mentioned that the decision to retire should be left on the individual. However, he opined against the notion of picking and choosing series in international cricket.

“I have always maintained this one thing. Retirement is an individual call, I think for me selectors should talk to him [MS Dhoni] and ask him about his future plan. Ultimately for me, playing for India, you should not be picking and choosing series,” Gambhir said.

While Dhoni missed the West Indies tour due to his training for the parachute regiment of the Indian Army in Kashmir valley, there is no official reason why he missed the South Africa T20Is. It is also reported that Dhoni has made himself unavailable for the Bangladesh T20Is.
