The Delhi batsman famously top scored for India in both the T20 World Cup and the 2011 World Cup, as Gambhir was crucial to both world cup triumphs.
Gambhir is now currently preparing to lead Delhi Daredevils in this year’s IPL, as he returns to his home town franchise. The left hander was a great player for DD, and was furious that the franchise did not bid for him in the 2011 auction.
With a huge chip on his shoulder, Gambhir went to KKR, where he achieved legendary status by leading the side to two IPL titles in three years. After seven wonderful years with Kolkata, Gambhir has returned home to Delhi, and will look to lead his team to glory.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Gambhir spoke about his desire to do well this year, and insisted that this will not be last season as a player.
“After being picked by DD for this IPL season, I said that ‘you are lucky enough if you start your career with a franchise and you get an opportunity to end your tenure with the same team’. I am the fortunate one that I am back with DD side with whom I started my IPL career. But it doesn’t mean that this is my last season,” Gautam Gambhir quoted.
This is what Ricky Ponting had to say after the event,
“I am trying to be more motivational than anything else. I am trying to maintain the team’s culture and the positive environment. We have 25 players in the dressing room. They are lucky to be the part DD and they got to understand that. Whenever they get the chance to play they make sure that they win the game for DD. That’s the bottom line,” Ricky Ponting quoted.
