ICC World Test Championship 2019 Points Table: How many points have India won after winning first Test vs South Africa?

ICC World Test Championship 2019 Points Table: India registered a comprehensive victory in the first Test against South Africa.

During the fifth day of the first Test of the ongoing South Africa’s tour of India in Visakhapatnam, India beat South Africa by 203 runs to register a 1-0 lead in the series. The victory also means that India has become the first team to register three wins in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship.

Chasing a 395-run target, South Africa succumbed to a Day 5 pitch as they were reduced to 70/8 in the morning session. A 91-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Senuram Muthusamy (49*) and Dane Piedt (56) aided South Africa to post a decent total.

Once Piedt was dismissed in the 60th over, it wasn’t long before South Africa got bundled out for 191 in 63.5 overs. Apart from Piedt and Muthusamy, opening batsman Aiden Markram (39) was also among the runs.

With bowling figures of 10.5-2-35-5, fast bowler Mohammed Shami was the pick of the Indian bowlers. Both him and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (25-6-87-4) played a pivotal role in India bowling out South Africa today.

Having won the match, India have continued their unbeaten streak in the ICC World Test Championship. It is worth mentioning that they are the only team which hasn’t lost a Test in the tournament till now.

India had won 120 points after whitewashing (2-0) West Indies in West Indies earlier this year. Having won the first Test against South Africa, India have gained an additional 40 points now. With a total of 160 points under their belt, India have retained their top position in the points table.

With 60 points to their name, both New Zealand and Sri Lanka are below India. With a 100-point difference from the second-ranked team, India sure have dominated the tournament till now.

The reason why India have won 40 points for a win instead of 60 is because this is a three-match series as compared to a two-match series in West Indies. Each series in the World Test Championship will be worth 120 points. The points for each victory will be 120 divided by number of matches to be played in the series.
