How Many ICC Trophies Have Been Won By Australia?

The recently concluded second edition of the ICC World Test Championship is the ninth ICC trophy won by the senior Australian men’s cricket team. Facing India in WTC 2021-2023 final at The Oval, the Aussies bundled out the opposition for 234 in 63.3 overs to pave way for a comprehensive 209-run victory.

With Pat Cummins and his bowlers managing to pick all the remaining seven Indian wickets in the morning session itself, it was a fitting manner for the most deserving to team to lift the mace. Co-incidentally, nine is also the number of ICC tournaments which India have lost since last winning one a decade ago.

Australia, who had first won an ICC event all the way back in 1987, have become the first cricket team to win all the four global competitions namely ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, ICC T20 World Cup and the Test Championship.

Australia’s success in the sport of cricket can be gauged from the fact that no other team will be able to better their record in the near future. A total of six different Australian captains lifting ICC trophies across all formats in the last 36 years is another indicator of how well they have dominated cricket.

It is noteworthy that legendary captain Ricky Ponting is only Australian captain to have won an ICC tournament more than once in men’s cricket. The fact that Ponting led Australia to a couple of World Cup and Champions Trophy title wins each within a span of six years speaks highly of what he had achieved throughout the course of a captaincy career which lasted between 2002-2012.
