The side was humbled and decimated on Monday
After a gusty and plucky 1-1 draw earlier last week, India went into their FIFA friendly with UAE high on confidence. The momentum accrued from their draw was just what the side needed as it took on an opponent ranked way above it at 74th place.
However, the result was far from what the country’s ardent football supporters had envisaged. India were thumped and clobbered on the night, a 6-0 schooling which went down to reserve its place in the list of India’s biggest ever defeats on the international stage.
Ali Mabkhout netted a hattrick on Monday, one which saw him craft his side’s routing of India. However, India had themselves to blame for their shambolic falling apart with the side being extremely lacklustre and dreary on the day.
Stimac Names 8 Changes
However, it weren’t only the Indian players who carried the brunt for the trouncing. Coach Igor Stimac’s decision to heavily shuffle his playing 11 failed miserably as he made as many as eight changes to the side’s setup.
Gurpreet Singh, Adil Khan, Anirudh Thapa, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Lalengmawia Ralte, Pritam Kotal, Liston Colaco and Mashoor Shereef were all handed a start by the coach.
The defeat now sees India with just the sole win since Igor has taken over as the side’s coach. A more worrying figure is the measly 11 goals the side has scored in 13 matches under Stimac, a period which has seen the club ship in 24 goals.
However, the 6-0 abomination managed to stave clear of India’s worst ever defeat till date, a horrific 9-0 thumping at the hands of Japan. We take a look at the top 10 worst defeats India has suffered over the years.
