Harry Edward Kane scored a hat-trick for Tottenham on boxing day, sealing a 5-2 win for the home side. This took him to a total of 56 goals this season making him the highest scoring striker in 2017.

He also broke a 22-year-old record of most PL goals in a calendar year (39) held previously by Alan Shearer. This was also the Englishman’s 6th hat-trick of the year- a European record.

The England international’s performances have seen him linked to Spanish and European champions Real Madrid previously.

What did Shearer say:

“Not only has he beaten my calendar-year record in the Premier League, but with his second successive hat-trick he eclipsed Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for goals in all competitions in 2017 for club and country,” Shearer wrote in The Sun .

“That is some company to be in but, believe me, he could score goals for Barcelona and Real Madrid as well. There lies the problem for Spurs going forward, of course.”

However, Shearer said the 24-year-old – who is contracted until 2022 – could move unless Tottenham were successful.

“If they don’t win anything in the next two years, Kane could have a big decision to make.  The fact Spurs are his club will be a big factor. I know what it means to play for your home-town club and stay loyal to them.” –he said.

From Tottenham’s lenses

Having a striker who potentially could win the third Golden Boot in a row is wonderful news for any club. Harry Kane is an indispensable player for the Lily Whites.

A few seasons ago, they saw then talismen Luka Modric and Gareth Bale make a switch to the Spanish outfit after enjoying two prolific seasons in England.

If they do hope to cling on to Kane, a Champion’s League spot this season is a bare minimum necessity. And Spurs should look to bring in some big names in the transfer market.

They would be willing to do everything possible so that the move into White Hart Lane post-renovation is with their star player.
