Kimi Raikkonen has signed a one-year extension with Ferrari: Spanish Media
Kimi Raikkonen’s future has been uncertain as Ferrari have been tight lipped about the future of the Finn.
The Finn had earlier put the ball in Ferrari’s court by saying that he wants to stay with the Italian team for one more year and that the deal is now upto Ferrari.
Ferrari are not short of options.
Leclerc seems like the long term Raikkonen replacement, but from reports in Spain, it looks like Ferrari have resisted the Leclerc temptation and have decided to give Kimi Raikkonen another go.
Raikkonen has had a brilliant season up until now with Ferrari, and while he hasn’t had any win, he has had more podium finishes than Vettel.
Barring a few mistakes here and there, Raikkonen could have been contending for the WDC, but as of now, that seems like a wild shot.
Guiamotor.com has reported that Raikkonen’s family was in the paddock during the Hungarian GP and that was because Ferrari were going to offer the Finn a new contract.
“The whole Raikkonen family was present all weekend, something that normally never happens. This was because the whole family had at least two conversations with the management of the Ferrari driver and the Ferrari summit,” the report said.
“Kimi can sign for one year and the Finn seems to be happy to do so. A pension then seems to be on the horizon because he is already quite old and would like to spend more time with his family.” it added.
Raikkonen’s future being sealed would mean heartbreak for Leclerc and it seems like he’ll have to wait at least an year before he can make that giant leap to the Formula 1 elite.
