Kohli has always said that he will always consider Dhoni as his captain, which is why could have been an awkward situation for Kohli with Dhoni on the field. Most of the current players have played under Dhoni, and would always seek his advice during the game. In case of an issue, who would the players turn to? Would they go the designated captain or one of the shrewdest minds in cricket?

But Kohli and Dhoni have managed to avoid any conflict of interest, by earning each other’s respect both on and off and the field. According to reports, Dhoni is quite happy with the way Kohli is progressing as a captain, and respects his decisions on the field.
This is what Kohli had to say about Dhoni,
“(While) you have to point out things that didn’t go well, you don’t want to be nagging them too much because they are professional cricketers, and I’ve played with a lot of these guys. You have to understand how to speak to them and how to communicate and discuss things with them,” said Kohli.
“His (Dhoni’s) input is obviously always very precise, very helpful at any stage of the game. Today it was all about asking him whether to keep the slip in there long enough or what does he think of the fields and just taking assurance,” said Kohli.
