Krunal Pandya opens up on 2019 World Cup prospects

Krunal Pandya opens up on 2019 World Cup prospects: The Indian all-rounders was vocal about his chances of making it to the ODI squad.

India all-rounder Krunal Pandya hailed the Indian bowling attack for ‘almost defending’ 126 runs against Australia during the first T20I at Visakhapatnam. “It was a great bowling effort. Everyone chipped in and we almost defended the low total. We just have to be more cautious about our batting,” Pandya was quoted as saying.

Speaking during the pre-match press conference at Bengaluru, Pandya denied losing momentum after a three-wicket loss in the first T20I. However, he admitted that tomorrow’s match is very important for the Indian team as they are 0-1 down.

“Tomorrow is a very important game as we are 0-1 down but I would not say that we have lost momentum. We lost the other night but we are not losing consecutive games. I am sure we will do well tomorrow,” Pandya said.

Of the five times (in 10 matches) that Pandya has batted for India, thrice has been at No. 7 and twice at No. 8. For Mumbai Indians, Baroda or India A, Pandya usually bats higher up the order.

“Not thinking about where I want to bat”

Being asked about his preferred batting position in the Indian team, the 27-year old cricketer said that it is not something which he is thinking about. “Honestly, I am not thinking about where I want to bat. I am just focused on what is in my hands irrespective of the situation. I want to contribute with both bat and ball,” he added.

While the wicket in Visakhapatnam was contrary to the format, Pandya was hopeful of the deck in Bengaluru supporting the batsmen. Furthermore, he was also vary of the opposition team.

“History says they are a competitive side and we know that they will give 100 percent every time they step on the field. We are mindful of that. The wicket looks good here. It will be better than Vizag for sure. So we expect more runs,” he further said.

There is no hiding to the fact that Pandya has enticed some eyeballs on himself regarding his maiden ODI call-up for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Given his all-round skills, he can prove beneficial for the team.

Being asked about his World Cup prospects, Pandya said, “Honestly, I am not thinking that far. I like to stay in the present. Whatever there is right now in my hands, I’ll focus on that. I don’t want to think about the future.”
