Southampton’s Alex McCarthy is open to a move to Liverpool.
Southampton shot-stopper Alex McCarthy assesses his options and sees Liverpool as a huge possibility. The reigning European Champions are looking for a backup keeper to Alisson Becker next season.
The current second-choice Simon Mignolet was insisting for a move away last summer, but Loris Karius’ stubborn nature forcing a transfer away from the club changed the whole scenery. The Belgian International requisited and made just two appearances in the League and FA Cup – abiding with club’s instruction.
Howbeit, sporting director Michael Edwards won’t stay in the way of Mignolet, who looks likely to leave the club this summer. According to Standard, Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy would be open to Anfield move in the summer window.
Angus Gunn has been preferred over Alex McCarthy under the management of the new manager Ralph Hassenhuttl. This has forced the former Reading goalkeeper to look for options elsewhere.
The 29-year-old impressed the old boss Brendan Rodgers in 2013, when he made plenty of saves when Liverpool visited Reading. Ever since then, the Reds have an eye on the shot-stopper, who will prove to be a solid understudy to Alisson Becker at Liverpool. The English International will have plenty of offers on the table and Liverpool will be one among them.
Fraser Forster is the preferred man to sell at St. Marys, as the Saints remain coy on keeping Gunn and McCarthy. Since Forster is on the transfer list, it would be easy to pursue him rather than McCarthy. However, the players have a huge say on the transfer and the long-term Liverpool target could force himself out of the club.
The Reds have no shortage of options. Former FA Cup winner with Liverpool, Pepe Reina is available for free in the summer transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp is weighing up a move for Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
Klopp considered a move for McCarthy last summer when a deal for Alisson looked like it might have to be put on hold with Roma digging their heels in.

What’s next?
The club is moving in the right direction and Alex McCarthy is a no-brainer for Jurgen Klopp. The English International has sufficient top-flight experience and could operate as an excellent option, when required. If the deal materializes, he will become the seventh Southampton player to sign for Liverpool since 2014.
