The company launched ‘Goals for Food’ campaign where they promised to donate food to 10,000 children for every goal scored by Neymar or Messi.

Mastercard launched the campaign on May 31, on their website and their social channels. The campaign was posted on Mastercard’s official Twitter account for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The campaign read, “for each goal scored by Messi or Neymar Jr. Mastercard will donate the equivalent of 10,000 meals to @WFP to fight childhood hunger and malnutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Mastercard also released a press release on their site, which stated that the campaign will run for the next 21 months. “Over the next 21 months, each goal represents an opportunity to unleash the power of a meal,” states the release.

“I’m proud to be a part of this campaign that will help change the lives of thousands of children in my country and other regions of the world. I hope this initiative gives as many smiles as possible to all the children.” Mastercard quoted Messi as saying in their press release.

The campaign will also kickstart Mastercard’s “#TogetherWeAre10” movement. “#TogetherWeAre10 was designed to inspire Latin Americans to unite for a common cause: improving the lives of thousands of children suffering from hunger,” reads the press release.

The initiative is a part of “Start Something Priceless” campaign, which was launched on April 10.

However, Mastercard has faced some backlash for the campaign as well. Various tweets in the reply to the campaign suggested that Mastercard is using the issue of global hunger to promote their brand.
