Mayank Agarwal dismissal vs New Zealand in 1st Test: Twitterati fumes over Indian opener's dismissal in Wellington Test

Mayank Agarwal dismissal vs New Zealand: The Indian opening batsman’s dismissal didn’t convince a large chunk of Indian fans.

During the third day of the first Test of the ongoing India’s tour of New Zealand in Wellington, India opening batsman Mayank Agarwal’s dismissal became a debatable topic for the Indian fans especially after Agarwal opted for a review.

It all happened on the fourth delivery of the 39th over when Agarwal’s attempt of flicking a Tim Southee delivery outside the leg stump saw him edging the ball to New Zealand wicket-keeper BJ Watling.

With the Kiwi fielders appealing in unison, umpire Aleem Dar didn’t take much time before ruling Agarwal out. Initially deciding to walk, Agarwal opted for a review after constant insistence from captain Virat Kohli.

Replays confirmed that the ball hadn’t made any contact with the bat on hotspot. However, snicko displayed a tiny fluctuation in the line which spoke of the otherwise.

With Agarwal’s bat also nearly touching the ground at the same time, there was a slight doubt but no clear evidence to justify the same meant that third umpire Michael Gough had to stick with Dar’s on-field decision.

Had the snicko not portrayed a tiny edge, the decision might have been changed but the second deciding factor working in the bowler’s favour made things difficult for Agarwal.

Opening the batting with Prithvi Shaw (14), Agarwal played exceedingly well for his 58 (99) including seven fours and a six. With Agarwal getting a solid start, the visitors would have hoped for him to reach triple figures especially after the hosts gained a 183-run first-inning lead.
