Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his magical No.7. He has carried this number right since his arrival at the Cricketing scene in the year 2004 -at the back of his jersey and in the minds of his billions of fans. The number is back again. If its the seventh day of the seventh month of the year, it is the very day when Indian Cricket’s one of the most favourite sons was born.
Given the importance of day amongst not just Indians but fans across the world, wishes started to pour just as the clock turned 12 midnight in India. Born in 1981, Dhoni has turned 38 years ‘young’ today. Having made his international debut in 2004, Dhoni has went on to achieve what no Indian captain has ever achieved in history- 2 precious World Cups, first time World No.1 in Tests, and a Champions Trophy title in 2013.
To enumerate his other numerous achievements on both his personal as well as professional fronts wouldn’t even do an iota of justice to his illustrious 16-year-long, alive and kicking career on the 22-yard deck. Because certainly, this legend’s accomplishments are way beyond his trophies, medals, wealth, and every other thing that our society thinks a successful person should possess.
But still, of all the aspects of Dhoni if I’ll have to pick just one, I think it will be his ability to give flight to the aspirations of millions of small town boys and girls of our country. MS Dhoni hails from Ranchi. But, Ranchi is only a synonym for many other small towns and cities in India and the people that form them- who looked up and still do, whilst sticking their necks out confidently amidst the best in the business at the global front, in any field and say, “Hey look, if this small town boy, who was just one of us a few years ago can do it, we can do it for sure.”
