Dwayne Bravo declares CSK captain

Dwayne Bravo declares CSK captain: The veteran all-rounder was wax lyrical about Chennai Super Kings’ captain.

Apart from hitting the winning runs against Delhi Capitals last night, veteran Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Dwayne Bravo was also their pick of the bowlers. Having leaked 17 runs in his first over, Bravo only conceded 16 in his next three.

In addition to the restriction on runs, Bravo also dismissed batsmen of the likes of Rishabh Pant (25), Colin Ingram (2) and Shikhar Dhawan (51). Speaking during the post-match press conference, Bravo unveiled what CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni asked of him and how he delivered the same with the ball in hand.

“MS [Dhoni] wanted me to bowl a straighter line, onto the stumps, wicket to wicket, a lot of seam ups. So today I bowled a lot more effort balls than in other games. Normally, I bowl a lot of slower balls, a lot of variations, yorkers but today the wicket wasn’t suitable for that type of deliveries.

“And again MS standing behind the stumps, he knew exactly what was required and he also knew that he could count on me at any point in time to deliver for him,” Bravo was quoted as saying.

“We don’t plan”

Having registered two victories in as many matches, Super Kings have started the tournament on a positive note. Only the second IPL team to win the IPL title thrice, Bravo was asked about the strategy-building process before any match. Denying any planning, the former West Indian cricketer laid emphasis to adapting to situations.

“We don’t plan. We don’t have team meetings. We just turn up and go with the flow. MS has a style, and every player has a style. We just watch the situation and adapt quickly and that’s where experience comes in,” Bravo said.

Bravo claims Dhoni to be the ‘Best Captain’

For a team who average age of players lies in the mid 30s, the general prevailing notion would rule them out of any T20 tournament. However, Chennai made the most of their experienced players by winning the title last season. Highlighting that beating experience is daunting, Bravo added that the team plays smart and are led by the “best captain in the world”.

“We are aware of our age. It’s there and you can google it but that’s nothing. We are not 60 year-olds, we are 35, 32-year-olds. We are still young, we look after our bodies and we have a lot of experience.

“In any sport, in any tournament, you just cannot beat experience. We know our weaknesses and we play smart and we are well led by the best captain in the world. And he [Dhoni] keeps reminding us that you know we are not the fastest team, but we can be the smartest team,” Bravo added.
