“It Really Helps Me Kind of Slow Down and Reflect Back” – Jimmie Johnson on His NASCAR Career’s Crowning Achievement
One thing we can all agree on is that Jimmie Johnson is one of the finest race car drivers ever in NASCAR. During his illustrious career, Johnson raked up seven championships equaling that to some of NASCAR’s greatest, such as Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr. However, there is one piece of the puzzle without whom the dominance may not have been possible.
Throughout thick and thin, it was Chad Knaus that worked alongside Johnson as his crew chief, guiding him to the victory lane. There were times when rules had to be put in place to prevent Johnson and Knaus from dominating the competition. Yet the legendary crew chief would find a way and a workaround to get them back to the top.
Recently, while speaking to Sirius XM NASCAR Radio, Jimmie Johnson spoke about his crew chief and appreciated his role in his career. He also briefly mentioned their collective Hall of Fame nomination, congratulating Knaus for making it in alongside him.

Johnson stated, “It’s an amazing day. You know, it really helps me kind of slow down and reflect back on, you know, 19 years in this awesome sport. And all the people that helped me get here. All the incredible moments that I had on this journey.”

He added, “I really trying to savor every minute of this and look forward to the next few months. Then my partner in crime through all those years Chad Knaus found his way in and very excited to share this experience with him.”

Further in the interview, the host mentioned how they had never seen any Hall of Fame nominee against whom NASCAR had implemented rules to block them every other year. Johnson went on to describe how the pair went through a lot, driving a host of different eras of cars.
Subsequently, Johnson replied, “We really looked at all that change as an opportunity. I mean, we certainly had stuff dialed in and it was successful with all the different packages. But the way Chad thought, the way Chad designed the team, all the resources we had at Hendrick.”
“Whenever the rules changed, there was an opportunity for someone to figure it out. And we really accepted that challenge and thankfully accepted most of it through generational changes.”
Throughout the years, their incredible partnership gave up the opportunity to witness some of the finest racing in recent years. And now, with their Hall of Fame Inductions, they will forever be remembered for their days of glory and greatness out on the racetrack.
