Ross Chastain’s First NASCAR Pole Brings “A Lot of Personal Validation” During Heavily Scrutinized Season

Throughout his time in the NASCAR Cup Series, Ross Chastain never could start a race from the pole. However, things changed for him and his team, as they set a milestone in their careers after Chastain made the pole during qualifying at Nashville.

Following the qualifying results, Chastain’s celebration was truly fitting for a team and a driver who continue to grow individually and as an organization.

Having one this pole, one would expect that it’d bring Chastain and the whole of his organization a lot of relief considering how heavily they’ve been surrounded by scrutiny and criticism this year. In fact, the significance and the emotional impact of the pole were clear soon after when Chastain had the chance to speak with the press, where, while he was still overwhelmed, he mentioned how it felt to have won this moment as he and Trackhouse Racing made history in the sport together.

An emotional Ross Chastain shares his thoughts on a career milestone

Chastain set the fastest lap during the qualifying for the Ally400 with a 160.687 mph lap, which was faster than the entire field by 1 mph. Thereby, he won his first-ever Busch Light Pole award.

In a rather emotional take, Chastain said, “It’s so much bigger than just one race or just getting you know first pit stall and everything. Nashville and where Trackhouse was born… There’s just so much, personally, so much agony in qualifying my entire life I’ve never tied together laps like the car was capable of. I’ve always left the time out there just to back up my time from round one to round two was the goal.”

“I don’t know how to describe it was so much like personal frustration with myself over the years and then going to work for over a decade now in the sport to try to qualify better. It just hasn’t shown results… It’s awesome for the team… But personally, just a lot of personal validation that the things we’re doing are right.”

What does Chastain’s championship run look like this season?

Last season, Chastain was on a roll in his bid for his first-ever championship. He even made it as far as the championship four race. However, he ended up finishing second in the standings after being unable to catch up to Joey Logano.

This year, Chastain currently sits 4th in the standings, with no race wins, seven top-10s, and five top 5s. He has also led a total of 348 laps with 16 races done and dusted for the season.

As for the playoffs, he should be able make it in, provided there are not more than 16 drivers with a win to their name this season. Although, there’s still plenty of time for the watermelon man to aim for his first win this season.

Considering all of this, there may be a good chance that the Chastain might return to the postseason with his eyes on the finale.
