“Bubba Can’t Walk In Here Because He’s Dead”: Allen Iverson Reveals To Kevin Hart Just How His ‘Bubba Chuck’ Nickname Came To Be

Allen Iverson is one of the most iconic players to have played in the NBA in the 21st century. His era-defining sense of style, everything from his braids to his tattoos to his baggy outfits, led a litany of players even to this day taking after him.

Both Iverson and Dennis Rodman normalized being different from the rest of the bunch when it came to being a professional athlete. Iverson, along with being a cultural icon, also gave a whole generation of shorter basketball layers hope that they too could be a legitimate threat out on NBA hardwood.

Iverson has built up an incredible legacy for himself, despite never having won a championship. With this legacy, came a bevy of nicknames that people bestowed upon him. The coldest undoubtedly was ‘The Answer’ but he had one more that he was given well before he made it to the league.

Allen Iverson on his nickname ‘Bubba Chuck’

Iverson’s mom was the one who came up with the nickname ‘Bubba Chuck’. For most, this would be quite the unusual nickname it’s just two regular names put together to form another name. And well, ‘most’ would be correct.

During AI’s childhood, his mother couldn’t decide on what kind of nickname she should give her son. Both of his uncles, Chuck and Bubba, were vying for this honor. Feeling quite indecisive, Iverson was known as ‘BubbaChuck’, a combination of both of his uncles’ names.

He would open up about this during an interview with Kevin Hart but would also confirm that ‘Bubba’ had passed away.

How Allen Iverson was given ‘The Answer’ nickname

Essentially, upon getting drafted but the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996, he had a single tattoo, and that tattoo was a bulldog that had the words ‘The Answer’ written on it. He also had his first signature sneaker with Reebok be called ‘The Question’.

Also, with the 76ers having becoming quite the laughing stock around the league during the mid-90s following Charles Barkley’s departure, it was up to Allen Iverson to breathe life back into the city. So technically, he was ‘The Answer’ to all of their basketball related problems.
