Decades After Orchestrating Michael Jordan's $2,500,000, Sonny Vaccaro Believed LeBron James Would Rake In $5,000,000 A Year On Sneakers

Michael Jordan and Nike have grown together and have a symbiotic relationship with each other. Over time, both grew to become the best. Jordan himself had become a brand by the beginning of 1990. When Jordan signed a $2,500,000 contract with Nike for five years, it changed the way brands viewed athletes and vice-versa. Sonny Vaccaro was heading the deal when MJ signed the five-year contract. The same Vaccaro believed that when LeBron James signed with the shoe giant, it would be at least 10 times that of Jordan, which would be around $5,000,000 a year.

Jordan wanted to sign a deal with Adidas, but they were not giving him a long-term contract or his signature shoes either. However, after talking to his parents, he agreed to meet Nike for a meeting and eventually sign a deal. While Jordan was signing a deal with Nike, Vaccaro was still struggling to deal with Jordan’s parents’ demands. Both Deloris and James Jordan wanted a share of Nike’s revenue. The demand made Sonny’s job even more difficult to finalize the deal with Mike.

Sonny Vaccaro underestimated LeBron James’ value in 2003

Darren Rovell published an article in October 2003 that tracked LeBron’s timeline for entering the NBA. He recalled that, decades after Jordan had signed a five-year deal with the shoe company, Sonny had said that LeBron would end up signing a $25 million contract with Nike, for five years. The prediction, in its essence, was true but not precise.

Sonny Vaccaro, who signed Michael Jordan to a five-year, $2.5 million deal in the mid-’80s, predicts that James’ shoe contract will top $25 million over five years,” wrote Rovell in the article.

However, Vaccaro was way off about the amount of money that LeBron would be offered by the brand. On May 22, 2003, the King signed a seven-year $100 million deal with Nike along with a $10 million signing bonus.

Sonny was right in predicting the brand value that the Los Angeles Lakers star had, but he underestimated the magnitude of it.

Besides LeBron and Michael Jordan, Durant becomes the third athlete to have a lifetime deal with Nike

Jordan and LeBron are often pitted against each other when it comes to the GOAT debate. However, when it comes to Nike, they sit right beside each other. MJ and LBJ were the only two athletes before 2023, who had a lifetime deal with the brand. Later in 2023, Kevin Durant joined the club and became only the third person to have a lifetime deal.

James and Jordan are the only two athletes with Nike who have over 20 signature shoes. Moreover, Jordan also has a deal with the company where he gets 5% royalties on each Jordan brand shoe sale.
