Michael Jordan is by far one of the richest athletes the world has ever seen. There haven’t been many cases where an athlete has risen from humble beginnings to become a billionaire.

In fact, only a handful of athletes who came from financially challenged backgrounds have gone on to become billionaires. But even among such athletes, Jordan stands above all with an estimated net worth of $2 billion.
For someone so rich, with a history of putting unbelievably large wagers on his gambling escapades, money is clearly of no concern. However, according to Deloris Jordan, Michael’s sister who shared the same name as their mother, the money only served as a way for Jordan to control the family.
Deloris caused Michael Jordan of using his wealth to control his family
In his book Michael Jordan: The Life, author Roland Lazenby revealed how tensions were ever-increasing in the Jordan household following James Jordan’s death. The Jordan household was slowly obeying all of Michael’s whims and fancy just because he was the man with the big paycheck. This also meant less criticism from family members.
However, Sis, whose real name was Deloris, wasn’t afraid of voicing her opinion. She was especially critical of her brother’s increasingly obsessive gambling. Michael had become prone to spending enormous amounts of money on gambling and Sis wasn’t too accepting of it.
Sis would often call out MJ for his huge wagers while his family still dealt with difficult financial problems. According to her, instead of listening to this grievance, MJ started punishing her. He would not include her in gifts and even when he did, they would not be the same as others.
Roland Lazenby: “She remained a persistent critic of her rich and famous younger brother, especially over his gambling substantial sums while she and other members of the family struggled financially.”
Lazenby further revealed how once, when MJ gave the entire family brand-new cars from his own Nissan dealership, Sis received the keys to a used car because she had criticized her brother.
Lazenby: “Her criticism apparently had a price. She noted that each of his family members received a brand-new vehicle from their brother’s Nissan dealership except for her. She was given the keys to a used car. She pointed to that slight as evidence that he (Michael Jordan) used his wealth to control them.”
Sis and Michael stopped talking in 1997
The relationship between Sis and MJ soured because of their differences. The two stopped talking altogether by the year 1997. Following this Michael did not give his sister a piece of jewelry even when he won the 1998 championship.

Even after his retirement, upon learning that Sis was writing a book, MJ caused her of using his fame and legacy to make exaggerated claims. Deloris would still complete and publish her book. Not the best brother-sister relationship considering everything that was available to Jordan.
