The Golden State Warriors have made one of the biggest moves this offseason already by trading Jordan Poole for veteran guard Chris Paul. While the Warriors front office gears up for an eventful summer ahead of the 2023-24 season, franchise stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson brace themselves for what has turned out to be an intense matchup, albeit outside the hardwood. The Splash brothers will face the NFL duo Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in Capital One’s ‘The Match’ at Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas on Thursday. The 12-hole golf showdown to aid the No Kid Hungry campaign will be broadcasted on TNT at 6:30 PM EST. The All-Star matchup has already generated quite a bit of buzz as Steph and Klay turn up the heat with some old school trash-talking against their football counterparts, especially against the Kansas City veteran Travis Kelce.

While Klay Thompson is more of a casual golfer, Stephen Curry is as seasoned on the greens as an amateur can get. The Dubs superstar was the top ranked golfer during his senior year in high school. He is also a regular presence in Celebrity golf tournaments, finishing as high as T3 in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament. Not only that, Curry has put up decent showings in his two appearances on the Korn Ferry Tour, which can be regarded as the golfing equivalent of the G-League. Steph currently holds a 0.3 handicap index and has impressed even pro golfers with his game.
Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson start the trash-talking against Kelce and Mahomes
The Splash brothers are trying to preserve the NBA’s reputation in trash-talking by taking some early digs before the decorated matchup. The duo talked about the upcoming tournament and addressed their competition during a recent appearance on the Through the Wire podcast. Curry started the interview by saying, “Confidence is at an extreme high. We know who the competition is-they’re gonna come in strong. We’ll be talking a lot of trash and bring the A-game but you know what me and Klay do. We know how to shoot, we know how to put the ball in the hole.”
In the meantime, one of the co-hosts asked Curry and Thompson who’s the most likely amongst the four to drive the ball in the lake. Curry thought for a second and named Kelce. The four-time NBA Champion said, “Imma go with Kelce, yes. He’s got a smooth swing but I feel like he’s gonna be talking so much that he might just forget where he hitting it.”
Even though Curry named the 33-year-old NFL tight end, five-time PGA TOUR winner Collin Morikawa believes Klay Thompson is the weakest link in the group. According to a report on pgatour.com, Morikawa has said, “Thompson’s swing looked “stiff as ever” and his 10-finger grip is “a bad start”.” The Dubs shooting guard responded to the remarks saying that he likes to be the underdog. Thompson also claimed that he has been practicing regularly to improve his game and watching golf tutorials on YouTube to tune the technical aspects of his game.

Curry and Thompson were recently asked as to who would win a 1v1 golf contest between Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan. Curry didn’t hesitate to pick Jordan, saying, “I mean, that’s gotta be Mike. It’s gotta be Mike all day.” Thompson added that Barkley would lose out to Jordan even with a 20-stroke advantage…That’s brutal!
The pairing of Mahomes and Kelce should expect nothing less on Thursday. Jeff Eisenband pointed out in his report on PGA Tour’s website that Curry has seen the pairing of Kelce and Mahomes play in the American Century Championship. Therefore, he will know what to expect during the contest.
