Pegged Into The ‘Mean Guy’ Persona, Charles Barkley Told A 4 Year Old Girl She Had Nothing To Worry About: “Not Till 7:30”
Charles Barkley might be one of the most interesting personalities in the NBA community. Along with his basketball skills, he could entertain fans by speaking his mind or starting a scuffle on the NBA court. However, despite his sense of humor, the above actions gave him the ‘mean’ tag in the league. In the book – ‘Sir Charles’, the co-author Rick Reilley stated how Charles told a 4-year-old that he was mean after a certain time of day.
Chuck has always been one to speak his mind without worrying about the consequences that may follow. And he tries to be true to himself. Despite earning over $40 million in career earnings, he had the opportunity to add more dough to his bag. However, he refused to follow the Game Plan and decided he wanted to ‘be himself’.
Charles Barkley told a girl he was mean after a certain time
In the book – ‘Sir Charles: Wit and Wisdom of Charles Barkley‘, his co-author Rick Reilley, talks about various topics following the NBA Hall of Famer’s NBA career and the future of the league. While describing his personality as ‘mean’, Rick narrates an incident that involved his 4-year-old daughter and the NBA superstar. Here is what he wrote:
“One afternoon, my family and I ran into him in a hotel lobby. It was still six hours to tip off. My four-year-old girl looked up at him in awe and said, ‘Are you Charles Barkley?’ ‘Yes, I am,’ he said. ‘Are you mean?’ she asked. ‘Not till 7:30,’ he said.”
That’s a classic Barkely response! Even though the player was only having fun, the adorable little girl would check the clock next time around. Charles has made a name for himself for his quick wit and one-liners. As an analyst for the famous sports show – ‘NBA on TNT’, he has entertained the fans for over a decade and continues to do so even today.
Charles Barkley ‘meanness’ on display
Charles Barkley has been involved in notorious incidents on and off the court. And one thing that can be said in confidence is all those incidents did not happen after 7:30 PM. His on-court fights are well captured, including a scuffle with his TNT colleague Shaquille O’Neal. However, his off-the-hardwood brawls have been reported by the media as well.
In 1997, Charles was involved in a bar fight that escalated to throwing punches. The former NBA player reportedly threw a man through a window during the scuffle. Despite the above incidents, Barkley is loved by the fans and continues to entertain them to date.
