We know him as Shaq but his real name is Shaquille O’Neal! Why does the NBA legend have so many nicknames and a penchant for giving them out? 

Shaquille O’Neal is by far the most loved personality in the NBA community. Kids today might only be able to see flashes of his playing years and know him as a gentle giant.

Shaq was and always will be an entertainer. He can make jokes and his very expressionist behavior gives us a lot of laughs. There isn’t much to dislike about him.

During his time in the NBA, his play and antics garnered a lot of attention and a lot of nicknames. These include The Big Diesel, the Big Aristotle, Shaq Fu, and so many more. One Google search will reveal tons of nicknames given to Shaq.

Not only is Shaq good at getting nicknames that praise his abilities on the court, but he is also adept at giving them out.

In the NBA, he is the one player who has given out the most popular nicknames for players. Names like The Big Fundamental for Tim Duncan, and The Flash for Dwyane Wade, were all given out by Shaq-fu.
