"Stop treating Deandre Ayton like a white dwarf": Lakers legend Mychal Thompson pulls out astronomy analogies to explain how Chris Paul and Monty Williams are misusing the Suns center

Mychal Williams was scathing in his criticism of Chris Paul and Monty Williams for underutilizing Deandre Ayton.

Deandre Ayton has had a coming-out party in this year’s playoffs. Much like Trae Young and Giannis, this young man looks like he’s taken several strides forward in his development. There are tons of stats to back up this notion.

Ayton is currently averaging the highest field goal percentage for one postseason in NBA playoffs history. In fact, he’s got the stat on such a lockdown that he’d have the record even if he misses 20 straight shots.

Ayton has achieved all of this despite having virtually no plays being run for him. He came out of Arizona looking like an offensive stud. But it’s the defensive end where he’s made his name in these playoffs.

Ayton has guarded Nikola Jokic and Anthony Davis quite stoutly over these playoffs. And when given the chance and featured briefly on offense, Ayton seems to have broken through offensively.

Every now and then, he flashes potential of being an all-time great. He’s definitely got a mid-range game in his locker, judging from what he’s shown in college and in short spurts in the league.

Mychal Thompson slams Chris Paul, Monty Williams for not featuring Deandre Ayton

One of the frustrating aspects of the Suns’ postseason thus far has been the up-and-down play of CP3. The man turned 36 8 weeks ago, so he’s naturally more injury-prone than most.

And when he’s come back from those blows, he’s always taken some time to readjust and raise his game. This wasn’t of much consequence in rounds 1 and 2, but the WCFs are a different ball game. Mychal Thompson thinks that CP3 should be facilitating him a lot more.

“The Sun is a Star, right? Well, Phoenix, stop treating Ayton like a White Dwarf when yall got a Hypergiant in the CENTER of your Universe. 9 SHOTS? NINE? If yall dont get Ayton 18 shots tomorow yalls Finals hopes might BLOW UP like a Supernova.”
