Derek Parish NFL Draft: Potential Landing Spots for Houston's Dynamic DL

The NFL Draft is almost here, and fans are excited to see which college athletes make it to the NFL. While everyone is busy talking about standout players such as Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud, there are a number of other special players who will be drawing teams to them. One such player is Houston Cougars’ Derek Parish.

Derek Parish is a unique player who had a great season in 2022, except for a brief injury period. During the Combine, he put up some very serious stats, especially in the weight room. However, it is not his strength or his work ethic that sets him apart from others. Rather, he has this one unique thing about his game, that might give teams a reason to pick him as soon as they can.

Derek Parish brings a whole new meaning to “dual-threat player”

The NFL is used to signal callers being referred to as “dual threat” players. Indeed, QBs like Lamar Jackson have proved to the community that passing and rushing skills are equally important, and can give headaches to a defense. However, it is likely that no one has heard of a “dual-threat” player who plays exceptionally well both in the offense and in the defense. Well, Derek Parish is such a player.

Parish can play both as an edge rusher and as a fullback. This is something very unique that this year’s draft class has to offer. What’s more, he could be a very good, long-lasting solution for teams who have problems in both positions. Even his work ethic is impressive, and so are his stats from his college career. Parish could just become the trump card in this year’s draft.

Will Parish be a dark horse at this year’s draft?

A player of Parish’s caliber could be a very valuable addition to a lot of teams this season.  Some of the biggest names from last year will be looking to sign edge rushers. With Parish’s ability to play as a fullback, teams could give themselves a wide range of offensive options, especially in short-yardage or goal-line situations.

One of the best teams Parish could end up with is the San Francisco 49ers. The team is already in a position to challenge for the playoff spots. If they can get their hands on a good QB, they could very well be a team to watch out for. Another team that could use Parish’s abilities is the Buffalo Bills. The Saints and the Steelers might need edge rushers too, However, they are not as attractive as the Bills and the 49ers.

One thing that might affect some teams as they head into the Draft, is the free agency market. Even now, there are some big names who are yet to sign for a team. Players like Odell Beckham Jr. will certainly shift a team’s focus during the draft if he signs for them. However, teams might just opt to go for fresher athletes, rather than one who has just recovered from an injury. What surprises does this year’s draft hold?
