“Jerry [Jones] Is Very Much About Image”: Zack Martin’s $36,000,000 Contract Extension Makes Colin Cowherd Pose His Theory on Cowboys’ Move

Zack Martin has finally been handed a reworked contract for two years which will now bring his two year pay out to $36,000,000. This move comes on the heels of a dramatic standoff between Martin and the Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. The timing and resolution of this cold war left many speculating about the underlying motives.

For the past 17 days, Zack Martin wasn’t reporting for practice at the Cowboys camp. The football guard also incurred massive fines. Weighing in on the situation, NFL analyst Colin Cowherd believes that this move had something to do with Dak Prescott’s inability to score during practice.

Should Zack Martin thank Dak Prescott for Renewed Contract?

Revered analyst Colin Cowherd on his show ‘The HERD,’ stirred the pot a little bit on the speculations around the new $36 million Zack Martin contract. He said, “Jerry Jones said a week ago, I’m not giving Zack Mart a new contract I mean he was adamant, the quotes were like ‘sit out camp’ and then a week later he gets a new deal”.

Cowherd then further tried deducing what might have happened. He stated, “I’ll throw my theory at you. Jerry is very much about image. He likes his former players on CBS and ESPN and Fox, I get it, I like Jerry, but there’s a lot of business image here”.

Colin Cowherd thinks that Dak Prescott and his below-par performance in the pre-season game might be a reason for the renewed contract of Zack Martin. He said,

“He [Jerry Jones] likes it out there that he knows football. Dak had all those picks, Trayvon Biggs getting in Dak’s face, calling him the ‘a-word,’ yeah and it was ugly. Jerry looked at that and went let’s get back on the optimistic Cowboy train and I think that ugliness at practice, my theory is, Jerry’s like we got to clean this up”.

There might be some truth in the version of the theory proposed by Colin Cowherd. Keeping other factors aside and thinking just in terms of the game, Zack Martin got what he was asking for. Integrating him back into the team seems like the smart move from Jerry Jones at this point in time.

Zack Martin’s Contract Details

The standoff between Zack Martin and Dallas Cowboys stands resolved. As per Adam Schefter, “Cowboys and All-Pro guard/team captain Zack Martin reached agreement on a reworked deal, per sources. The new deal will pay him north of $18 million in each of the next two years. Martin was scheduled to be at $13.5 million this year and $14 million next year, so it’s an additional $8.5+ million. Both years also have been fully guaranteed, per source”.

This standoff wasn’t kind to Zack Martin, at least in terms of financial consequences. Martin was to mandatorily report to pre-season training on July 25. However, the star guard held out in joining the Cowboys in training. This went on for the next 20 days, till last Sunday. Applying simple math to the daily fines of $50,000, the standoff cost Zack Martin a full $1 million. However, in the end, the Dallas Cowboys and Martin reworked a nice deal and that’s all that matters.
