The bigger they are, the harder they fall. No other expression fits the situation the Dallas Cowboys found themselves in last Sunday. Set to face the Washington Commanders, with a real chance to have their wild-card game at home. All they had to do, was beat a weak Commanders team, starting a fresh new QB. What ended up happening, is a monumental disaster, and an embarrassing defeat.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did not hold his tongue when talking about his team’s performance on Sunday. He says, “We get to s*ck on that all week. If that doesn’t make you want to get ready to go in about six, seven days, nothing else will. That was as thorough a butt-kicking as we’ve had this year, and we’re going to find out if that’ll get you ready or not. It should with what these guys are made of.”
Sunday’s 26-6 defeat marks the Cowboys’ worst loss of the year, the previous one being a 19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coincidentally, the Cowboys will face the Bucs next week at the Raymond James Stadium, the site of their last humiliation. The question then is, if the Cowboys will bounce back as their owner expects they will.
Dallas Cowboys lose to a Commanders side fielding a rookie QB
While the Commanders rejoice in the fact that their rookie managed to put up a good performance, the Cowboys will be looking for answers. Overall, every aspect of the Dallas Cowboys faltered, especially their offense and special teams. The Commanders dominated their divisional rivals, shutting them out for 3 quarters, which included 3 first-half turnovers from the Cowboys.
Sam Howell is the Commanders’ 5th-round pick from this year’s draft, and this was his first game in the NFL. He did not disappoint, as his first-ever pass ended up being a touchdown, and that set a marker for things to come in this game. What’s more, he also scored a rushing touchdown, becoming the first QB to score both a passing and rushing TD in the same game, since Robert Griffin III in 2012.
More importantly, the Commanders seem to have found a promising player, at a time when they’re desperately searching for stability. Howell is definitely going to be a major contender for the starting position next year, and may just be the leader the Commanders need.
For the Cowboys, what awaits them is another dreadful meeting with the Buccaneers at the Bucs’ home ground. The Cowboys have never beaten Tom Brady in their past 7 meetings. Which will definitely be in the back of their minds. With the stakes much higher than before, the Cowboys need to step up their game. With the guns they pack in their offense, hopefully, this time it’ll go well.
