"Michael Jordan Did It, Tom Brady Did It": Shannon Sharpe Backs LeBron James' Mysterious Jay-Z Quote As A Reminder Of Greatness

LeBron James took to Instagram to remind fans how great he was with a Jay-Z quote. Of course, he received some backlash from it, but Shannon Sharpe was quick to point out that other greats like Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, and Lionel Messi have all done similar things. Fans against LeBron asked why he needed to keep reminding everyone of how great he was when nobody else used to. Sharpe quickly tore down this argument.

This season was unique for LeBron James. The Lakers started off abysmally, looking like they were going to miss the playoffs for a second straight year after acquiring Russell Westbrook. However, a deal at the trade deadline sent Westbrook out and brought in a bevy of role players that kickstarted a title run for Los Angeles. The Lakers snuck into the playoffs as the 7th seed, making it all the way to the WCF. However, the Nuggets would sweep them, ending a potential Cinderella story.

Now, there are rumors of LeBron retiring, and in the midst of all that, LeBron had some words to say.

Shannon Sharpe doesn’t believe that LeBron was the first to do something like this though.

Shannon Sharpe reminds everyone that Tom Brady and Michael Jordan didn’t shy away from showcasing their greatness

Shannon Sharpe heavily disagreed with fans who thought that LeBron was making too big a show out of nothing to remind everyone how great he was. He had a multitude of examples to support his point as well.

He first brought up how Tom Brady released a documentary called “Man in the Arena” where he’s labeled as the “greatest of all time” (GOAT). Brady was the executive producer for that documentary, and so he had a major say in what went into the media, meaning that he was also, in essence, showcasing his legendary status to fans.

Sharpe brought up Lionel Messi as well, reminding people how he took a picture with a goat for an Adidas commercial, a little bit more explicit of a gesture. Like Brady, Jordan was the executive producer of “The Last Dance”, a series that essentially enshrines Jordan as the GOAT of the NBA.

Thus, Sharpe doesn’t think that LeBron did anything unique. Sure, he may have been a little corny while doing so, but so did the other greats of sports.

Is Sharpe’s claim legitimate?

Sharpe makes a valid claim here. Every legendary player has gone out of their way to make it a point that they’re at the top of their game.

Sure, some athletes are more humble than others, but it’s been done. The hatred towards LeBron is a little much in this case, and it may have to do with the fact that perhaps unlike Messi, Brady, or Jordan, he isn’t unanimously (or at least majory) accepted as the GOAT.

Brady with seven rings has no competition in the NFL. He’s by and far the best quarterback to have played the game. Whether you want to look at it from a success point of view or a statistical point of view, he’s simply unmatched right now.

Jordan and Messi face some stiffer competition. In the modern era, Messi is definitely the greatest soccer/football player, but if you go back, you have greats like Diego Maradona and Pelé who may have a greater claim to the GOAT title.

Of course, in the NBA, Jordan faces competition from LeBron. Many believed that with another LeBron could have surpassed Jordan this year, but now, the wait continues.
