The NFL community has joined millions across the United States to mourn the death of Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed earlier this week in Utah. The conservative activist, who was 31 years old, was the founder of Turning Point USA.

Kirk rose to national prominence in the 2010s by building one of the most influential conservative youth organizations in the country. Supporters admired him for mobilizing young voters and being outspoken about faith and patriotism, while critics often clashed with him over his sharp political rhetoric.

Kirk was fatally shot while speaking to students at an event at Utah Valley University. Investigators believe it was a targeted attack. Footage circulating on social media captures the moment: Kirk is seated before a large outdoor audience when a gunshot suddenly echoes through the crowd. He clutches his neck and collapses from his chair as attendees scream and scatter in panic.

A polarizing figure in American politics, his death has stirred both grief and controversy. Even as Kirk’s legacy continues to be debated, his death has triggered an outpouring of grief from people across various walks of life, including athletes, fans, and political figures.

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III shared one of the most emotional tributes, tying Kirk’s death to a broader reflection on the state of the country. “We need to pray for America,” he wrote on X.

Pray for Charlie Kirk’s family after he was gunned down today and killed. Pray for the family of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska who was murdered on a train in cold blood in Charlotte, North Carolina…” added Griffin. Others from the NFL chimed in, too.

Former Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant condemned those who celebrated Kirk’s passing online. “Seeing people who are excited about Charlie Kirk dying are messed-up human beings… Sending love to his family,” he state.

Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre called the news “tragic”: “I’m at a loss for words. Only thing I can think of is tragic. Please keep Charlie Kirk and his family in your prayers…”

Former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow reflected on Kirk’s faith and family.

“I’m shocked and devastated to learn about the passing of Charlie Kirk. Above all else, Charlie was a follower of Jesus, a husband, and a dad. He was a man of passion, courage, and [he] devoted his life to making an eternal impact. Demi and I are praying for Erika, his two daughters, and everyone who loved him,” said Tebow.

FOX Sports analyst Emmanuel Acho admitted he was struggling to process the news.

“The death of Charlie Kirk has honestly left me distracted. My heart hurts for his wife, his kids, and his loved ones. I have way too many feelings for Twitter, and haven’t been able to put them together,” wrote Acho.

Regardless of where one stood in terms of politics and opinion, Kirk’s sudden death has left a deep mark on American public life.
