It all happened in the 3rd delivery of the 16th over of the Indian innings. The Proteas all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo bowled a back of a length delivery, which perhaps took Virat Kohli by surprise as the ball climbed onto him. Kohli poked at the outside off delivery, and what happened next was simply unbelievable.
Quinton de Kock grabbed an absolute stunner diving full stretch onto his right. It had to be an absolute heck of a catch to dismiss the World’s No.1 batsman, and de Kock did absolutely what was expected of him.
India in Trouble
Chasing a respectable total of 227 at The Rose Bowl in Southmpton, the Indian batting got off to a really dodgy start, courtesy some scintillating exhibition of fast bowling from Kagiso Rabada and Chris Morris, especially the former. Shikhar Dhawan (8 runs off 12 deliveries) finally succumbed to the lightning-quick Rabada in the first ball of the 6th over after struggling throughout his brief sting at the crease.
As the Indian duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma then looked to steady the Indian ship, they received a major dent again with Virat Kohli too departing cheaply (18 runs off 34 deliveries) after Dhawan.
In their bid to consolidate the innings, the aforementioned duo took some time in the middle, scoring at an average of 3-4 runs an over. At the time of writing India were struggling at 54/2 after the end of 16 overs.
Earlier, India displayed an exceptional performance with the ball to restrict the good Proteas batting line up to 227/9 after 50 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 10-0-51-4.
South Africa’s situation could have been much worse had Chris Morris (42 off 34) and Kagiso Rabada (31 off 35) not stitched a vital patnership down the order. The Proteas were 89/5 at one stage of the game.
