IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore bought as many as nine players to complete their 24-member squad for the 12th edition of the IPL (Indian Premier League). Having retained only 14 players last month, Royal Challengers were expected to actively participate in yesterday’s auction.
Having already acquired the services of Marcus Stoinis during the trade window, RCB were left with 10 spots to fill in the auction. With them buying eight overseas players, they also finished that quota last night.
Middle-order batsmen was one major aspect of their line-up which RCB were struggling with. Having a stellar top-order comprising of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers for years, RCB’s batting always received a blow when it came at finishing the innings.
It is worth mentioning that RCB seemed to have tried their utmost best to sort that issue. Out of the nine players which RCB have bought, seven are batsmen/all-rounder who bat in the middle-order.
Furthermore, what remains the best part about their strategy is that the variation in these seven names. Right-hand batsman, left-hand batsman, batting all-rounder, bowling all-rounder, wicket-keeper batsman, Indian and overseas, you name a genre and you will find it in the auction.
Bangalore accumulated a lot of buzz by buying West Indies middle-order batsman Shimron Hetmyer (INR 4.2 crore), Mumbai all-rounder Shivam Dube (INR 5 crore), teenager Prayas Ray Burman (INR 1.5 crore) and South Africa wicket-keeper batsman Heinrich Klaasen (INR 50 lakh).
Perhaps, Royal Challengers missed a trick by not buying an Indian opening batsman. Given the likes of their potential openers in two out of captain Virat Kohli, wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel and all-rounder Moeen Ali, one feels that they should have bid for an Indian opener as well.
