Renault confirm Ocon talks, decision to be announced
The driver market is sure to go into overdrive during the Summer break, with team bosses working over time in order to get their teams sorted for 2019.
The top 3 teams are more or less sorted, but the midfield is sure to experience a host of changes, as the rumour mill suggests that drivers are sure to move around.
Renault boss Abiteboul has today confirmed that Renault contacted Ocon, his manager and Mercedes a few months back about a possible move to the team.
However, nothing has been agreed until now. Abiteboul is confident that the decision would be out by the end of the summer break.
“We have not made a decision, we have not signed anything,” said Abiteboul.
“We’ve got a number of options, good options.
“Carlos staying with us is one of them, but things rather are in Red Bull’s hands.
“Esteban joining us could be an option. Mercedes is running Esteban’s career, it’s a good thing, but it’s also something we have to consider.” he added.
Abiteboul the confirmed that the decision would be announced at Spa.
“We’ve had talks for a long time, we first contacted his manager and Toto weeks, months ago.
“We’re talking and we’ll keep talking with everyone during the break, including Carlos.
“Once again, no decision has been made, we’ll see with time and reach a decision at Spa.
“I think all requirements will be met for us to announce things at Spa.” Abiteboul concluded.
If Ocon indeed moves it would be interesting to see what Renault does with Sainz and Hulkenberg.
One thing is clear, once Ricciardo’s deal with Red Bull is announced sometime next week, the volatile driver market will surely be on the move.
