Rooney on Mourinho: Former Manchester United superstar Wayne Rooney has spoken about Mourinho’s situation at the club.

Manchester United have had an underwhelming season, both in terms of summer window and football so far. The club reportedly failed to meet Mourinho’s demands in the transfer market, and United finds itself at 8th in the league after 8 matches.

The situation was further worsened after a training session video showed Mourinho and midfielder Paul Pogba arguing with each other.

However, United’s victory against Newcastle with a late winner from Alexis Sanchez has fuelled some positivity among the fans.

Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, who left the club in 2017 after 13 years at the club, has now spoken on Mourinho’s situation at the club. There have been various reports in the last two weeks which suggested that Mourinho could be sacked by the club. Rooney, however, has backed the manager.

Rooney on Mourinho:

The former English international has insisted that the club should give time to Jose Mourinho. “It’s tough [at Old Trafford], it has been a tough situation,” said Rooney, after his latest outing with DC United.

“The players, the manager, it has been a tough start to the season. I know Jose is getting a load of stick but I said a few weeks ago, the players have to stand up. They have to be counted and they have to be better.

“The manager can do so much but then it is down to the players on the pitch to produce and probably collectively. It [the poor run of form] is a bit of everything coming together but Jose is an easy target. Some of the players have to be better.

“I said the same thing when Louis van Gaal was there. He took a lot of stick but behind closed doors I said to the players, ‘We have to be doing better'”

“Personally I think he [Van Gaal] set us up brilliantly the way but we didn’t produce on the pitch so I am sure that is getting said behind the scenes.”

What next?

Manchester United will return to Premier League action on October 20 with a big game against Chelsea, who are currently 2nd in the Premier League. They will then host Juventus in the Champions League.
