Busquets signs new contract with FC Barcelona

Midfielder Sergio Busquets signs new contract with FC Barcelona, extending his stay at Barca till 2023.

After months of speculation, midfielder Sergio Busquets has signed a new contract with FC Barcelona. The defensive midfielder has extended his Barcelona contract until 2023.

Barcelona has increased Sergio Busquets’ release clause in the new contract to 500 million euros.

The Catalan club has particularly concerned itself with release clause while extending the contracts, ever since Neymar signed for Paris Saint Germain in a 222 million euros deal last year.

Lionel Messi, who also signed a contract extension with Barcelona recently, has a release clause of 700 million euros.

Barcelona released a statement to announce Busquets’ new contract with the club.

“Barcelona and Sergio Busquets signed this morning an agreement to renew the player’s contract, which will end on June 30 2023,” the statement read.

“The player’s release clause rises from 200 million euros to 500 million.”

Sergio Busquets made his debut for Barcelona under Pep Guardiola in 2008, after coming through the youth teams at La Masia. He had earlier played for Guardiola while the manager was the coach at Barca B.

Ever since his debut, Busquets has played 490 matches for Barcelona, winning seven La Liga and three Champions League titles at the club.

He also won the World Cup with Spain in 2010, and won the Euro two years later.

There has been no formal announcement regarding the contract of Ivan Rakitic, however. The Croatian midfielder has publically stated his desire to sign a new contract at FC Barcelona.

The club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, however, stated that Rakitic will not be given a new contract this year, but the club may likely sign a new deal with the Croatian star after the end of the season.
