Shubman Gill should be given another opportunity vs NZ

Shubman Gill should be given another opportunity vs NZ: The legendary player was impressed by the teenager’s short stay in the middle.

Teenage batsman Shubman Gill made his ODI debut for India yesterday in the fourth ODI of the ongoing India’s tour of New Zealand. Coming in to bat at No. 3 in the sixth over, Gill became a part of a colossal batting collapse which eventually saw India being bowled out for 92.

During his stay in the middle, Gill saw three Indian batsmen getting out from the non-striker’s end including captain Rohit Sharma. As proceeding went by, he was the next one to follow them. The 19-year old right hand batsman ended up scoring 9 (21) with the help of one four.

Given that India already have the series in their bag, it can be assumed that Gill will get another go in the fifth ODI to be played on Sunday at Wellington.

Former India captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar, who had earlier named Gill as regular India captain Virat Kohli’s replacement for the last two ODIs, still stands by his words regarding the rookie batsman. During his appearance on Star Sports, Gavaskar admitted that Gill looked nervous during his stay but was hopeful of him getting another opportunity.

“Well, for whatever little time he [Gill] was there, he was a little bit tense, nervous. That’s understandable because he is playing for the country for the first time. Even then, when Boult was swinging the ball, he was able to get in line.

“Yes, he was hit by the short ball as well. I think this guy’s got a future, you have got to be patient with him. I am sure he will get another opportunity,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying on Star Sports.
