One last four spot, two teams closest to it in the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab. What is perhaps the most bemusing aspect of this equation is that despite being in such a pivotal position to seal that final knock-out berth and make it theirs, both the sides look least interested. Time and time again, the two have squandered opportunities on a colossal scale.
With two defeats in each of their previous encounters, when the Sunrisers and Punjab square off against each other, the magnanimity of the two points at stake couldn’t be higher. Both find themselves on 10 points after 10 matches with SRH just about separating Punjab by the virtue of a better net run rate.
It’s this picture that is set to see this encounter be a cracker of an affair. There couldn’t be a better time to take a massive step forward towards the last remaining top 4 spot and both these franchisees will be looking to put in a performance worthy of seeing them reach the eliminator.
SRH vs KXIP – What numbers suggest?
Overall, this is a clash which has heavily favoured SRH. In the 13 matches the two have traversed, SRH have the nine wins to their name with Punjab by far the second best side with four wins. Out of the six matches played between at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad have won five matches as compared to Punjab’s lone win.

SRH vs KXIP – Key battles
David Warner vs Ravichandran Ashwin
Despite being an Australian, David Warner is someone who has had no problem playing the slower stuff. Taking part in his final match for the side before he goes back to Australia, Warner will be looking to deliver another good innings and take is side towards a high total.
Meanwhile, in Ashwin Punjab have a spinner who’ll be eyeing to work up Warner. Ashwin has had a much maligned season, coming under heavy fire for his maligned mankading act along with his unpleasant temperament. It will be an interesting clash to partake in when these two meet on the 28th.
Rashid Khan vs Chris Gayle
Just like his side, Gayle has thrown our way the good innings but had too many ups and downs this year. Punjab are a side who heavily rely on their opening pair, something they look to build on from. The biggest flaw in Gayle’ batting comes against the slower pace with the spinning ball, given drift and air an extremely treacherous ball for him to face.
On a SRH surface that has slowed down substantially as play goes on, SRH will employ Rashid against Gayle early on. If they can get him packing cheaply, SRH will have had a massive inroad.
SRH vs KXIP – Match Prediction
Such is the form of both the sides that it becomes a tricky task trying to pin out the winner for this. We do expect SRH to come out of this with the two points given the sheer force of their batting unit and specialist bowlers in Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rashid Khan.
The hosts are packed with players who like taking accountability and Punjab might find it tough to get past the vigil they put up on the night.
