Sri Lanka tour of India 2020: BCCI announce three-match T20I series in the wake of Zimbabwe series

Sri Lanka tour of India 2020: BCCI have managed to brought in a replacement after the suspension of Zimbabwe from international cricket.

BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) have announced a replacement series “in the wake of” Zimbabwe getting suspended from international cricket. Neighbouring country Sri Lanka will tour India for a three-match T20I series slated to be played on the same dates.

In what came as an unfortunate development in July this year, Zimbabwe were recently suspended by ICC (International Cricket Council) citing political interference in their cricketing setup.

It is worth mentioning that Zimbabwe recently took part in a Tri-Nation series including Bangladesh and Afghanistan in Bangladesh. While it seemed that Zimbabwe might tour India in January after more than one and a half decade, the same won’t happen now.

The announcement was made public via a media release tweeted by BCCI. “In the wake of Zimbabwe’s suspension by ICC, the BCCI invited Sri Lanka to participate in the three-match series. Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed their participation and the itinerary is as under,” the BCCI said in a release.

The three matches will be played on January 5, January 7 and January 10 in Guwahati, Indore and Pune respectively.

Currently hosting South Africa, India are also scheduled to host Bangladesh, West Indies and South Africa (ODIs) again in this grand international season.

Both India and Sri Lanka would be looking to yield the best from the series. With the ICC T20 World Cup also to be played next year in Australia, teams are in full preparation especially when it comes to playing this format at the highest level.

Talking of India, before drawing the three-match series against South Africa 1-1, they had whitewashed West Indies (3-0) in West Indies last month.
