Steve Smith to captain Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2018
Rajasthan Royals have long held an affinity to Aussie cricketers, with the likes of Shane Warne and Shane Watson captaining the side over the years. We can now add another Aussie to that particular list, as the Royals have officially appointed Steve Smith as their skipper for the 2018 season.
Smith led the Rising Pune Super Giants last year, as the Aussie was instrumental in his side’s wonderful run in to last year’s final. Smith top scored for his side with 472 runs, and almost led his side to the title.
The Aussie skipper was then retained by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the auction, as he returned to his old team for Rs 12 crores. This is what Smith had to say after officially being named the skipper for the 2008 IPL champions.
“It is great to be back at [Rajasthan] Royals. I was with the franchise a few years back. We had a great time. Thanks for giving me the honour and privilege of leading the Royals. I am looking forward to have a successful campaign. Looking forward to working with Warne,” Smith said.
Shane Warne will also return for this season, as the legendary Aussie will reunite with his beloved IPL franchise. Warne famously led the Royals to the title in 2008, as the Aussie inspired his team and scripted a memorable triumph.
This is what Warne had to say about Smith,
“I’ve watched him [Smith] bat through the years, watched him captain the national side. I think he’s the best batsman in Test cricket. Really looking forward to working closely with Smith and hearing his thoughts. Looking forward to helping him if I can and taking the team forward,” Warne said.
