In the ongoing 2019 Ashes series between England and Australia, not for a brief moment did Australia batsman Steve Smith made anyone realize that he is playing Test cricket after more than a year.
Right, I repeat “Right” from the word go, Smith was belting runs against an English attack in their own conditions. The fact that he has registered record-breaking numbers despite missing one Test of a series speaks highly of his formidable form.
Coming on the back of a mediocre ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, Smith didn’t even let his own form in another format affect him in his preferred format in Test cricket.
It is worth mentioning that Sir Don Bradman holds the record of scoring most runs in an Ashes series. Back in 1930, Bradman had scored 974 runs in five Tests at an average of 139.14 and a strike rate of 61.64 including four centuries.
Much like 2019, 1930 Ashes was also played in England. Bradman’s record also stands as the highest score in any Test series.

In the four matches that Smith played in this series, he scored 774 runs at an average of 110.57 and a strike rate of 64.71 including three centuries and three half-centuries each. While Smith missed out on the overall record of Bradman by 200 runs, he surpassed Sir Alastair Cook’s 766 runs in Ashes 2010 and his own record of 687 runs in Ashes 2017.
