Steven Gerrard takes a dig at Manchester United ahead of the Old Firm Derby

Steven Gerrard takes a dig at Manchester United ahead of the Old Firm Derby. The Liverpool legend couldn’t resist himself during the Rangers press conference.

Steven Gerrard spent most of his career at Liverpool. He has witnessed several derbies during his stay at the Merseyside. The Anfield legend has spent almost an entire career battling Manchester United and Everton. As a manager now, he is ready to take charge in one of the most historic derbies; The Old Firm.

The match between Celtic and Rangers in Scotland is one of the most fiercely contested rivalry in any sport around the world. However, Gerrard led Rangers are yet to win a match against Celtic this season, having lost a match in both the Scottish league and the Scottish League Cup this season. Gerrard will be keen to get one back on the league leaders as they head to Celtic park in the afternoon tomorrow.

Ahead of the match, Gerrard was asked to compare the Old Firm to the rivalries he faced during his own playing days with Manchester United being the principle subject of the question. Gerrard went on to answer the question but couldn’t resist taking a shot at the Red Devils.

Speaking in the conference, Gerrard said:

“There are many similarities but it’s not necessarily a derby match as it’s Liverpool v Manchester.

“The rivalry comes from being the two most successful teams in England so that’s a similarity to the Old Firm.

“I think the Liverpool v Everton derby match is more similar in terms of the bitterness, the hatred and the bragging rights in the local community.

“Manchester’s 40 minutes to an hour away and obviously Manchester United are not at the top of the table anymore so that’s another difference for you.”

For most of Gerrard’s career, Manchester United were the dominant force in the Premier League. It must be very pleasing for him now to see Liverpool dominate the league the way they are while Manchester United flounder in the mid-table. Stevie G may have but one regret that this did not happen during his playing days.
